WASEEM RAZA: Left-arm spinner with a right mindset

Jammu and Kashmir is loaded with a horde of spin-bowling all-rounders who have excelled well at various age-groups to make a name for themselves. The prominent one being the J&K’s only international cricketer Parvaiz Rasool. Parvaiz Rasool unsurprisingly has grabbed all the headlines, but there is another spin-bowling all-rounder who hasn’t done any harm to his reputation of being one of the most talented players in J&K’s senior team.

Wasim Raza has gone quietly about his business over last couple of seasons to emerge as the reliable spinner who knows his trade well. Not only he can pick wickets, the left arm spinner can tie the batsmen down to force the false shots.

He can tonk it big lower down the order that makes him almost a certainty in the playing XI.

The twenty three year old Raza started playing cricket by watching his brother who was also a local cricketer. Due to enormous cricket fever in his locality Waseem started loving cricket and once when he scored a tremendous half century in an inter school match at S.P College ground boosted his confidence and he starting believing that he can go big in cricket. His brother was also a spinner so he decided to play as a spin bowling all-rounder.

Raza was picked for the J&K U-19 in 2008 where he didn’t disappoint. The all-round brilliance meant a call-up to the senior side where he made his first-class debut in 2012-13 season.

Waseem has shown promise with both bat and the ball having taken 27 wickets and scored 376 runs in the 20 first class games he has represented J&K thus far. His List-A stats read 25 wickets from 19 games to go with 223 runs. Indian limited overs’ skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of the prized scalps in the List-A matches.

Fast bowler Sameer Ali has always been a help to Raza. He has helped him a great deal in shaping his career.

As of now, Raza is work in progress and if he keeps working hard and improves his skills, there is no reason he wouldn’t play for a longer period of time for J&K.
